Depression is generally ranked in terms of severity — mild, moderate, or severe. The degree of your depression, which your doctor can determine, influences how you are treated. Symptoms of depression include:

  • Sleeping problems: either you cannot sleep or you tend to sleep too much
  • Extreme difficulty in concentrating
  • A noticeable shift in your appetite, usually resulting in either gaining weight or losing weight
  • Feeling like you are worthless, guilty, or full of hate for yourself
  • Feeling of hopelessness and helplessness
  • Agitated, restless, and irritable
  • Withdrawn, not wanted to take part in your regular activities
  • Tired, fatigued and general lack of energy
  • Recurring thoughts of death or suicide
