Hiding Stretch Marks

Effective Treatments for Stretch Marks

Finding an effective treatment for stretch marks is at the top of many people’s lists of important things to do, both men and women of all ages and skin tones. Most associated with pregnancy, stretch marks appear after the skin has been stretched beyond its usual limits, tearing the tiny fibers of vital collagen and elastin, causing the unsightly jagged lines to appear.

The best time to treat stretch marks is, ideally, before they even form, or at least as soon as you start to notice changes in the appearance of the skin. The areas that are the most vulnerable are the stomach, arms, legs, and breasts, although stretch marks can form any place on the body and actually begin deep within the dermis, or the middle layer of the skin.

Skin that is well hydrated, both from the inside and the out, is far less likely to be affected by stretch marks, or their technical name, striae gravidarum, than skin that is dry and starving for moisture. As we age, our bodies naturally produce less and less collagen and elastin, which are vital for keeping skin smooth, supple, toned, and able to be stretched without irreparable damage.

Besides the importance of drinking plenty of water, never underestimate the power of creams, lotions, and moisturizers for protecting the skin from stretch marks, but also for keeping it looking its absolute youngest. Products that are made from all-natural ingredients are excellent for hydrating skin, especially for those with sensitive skin or allergies.

A skin care regimen including aloe vera, vitamins A and E, and cocoa butter, following regular exfoliation, which is necessary to help minimize the appearance of stretch marks and to promote the growth of newer, healthy cells. For exfoliating naturally, almonds and grapefruit extract as well as products with citrus fruits are excellent for strengthening the skin before moisturizing.

Skin care products with vitamins B5 or D3, and zinc in addition to those with retin A and other beneficial acids, minerals, oils are also helpful for treating stretch marks. There are also, of course, thanks to the advent of plastic surgery, more drastic measures for dealing with the appearance of stretch marks, which may be of benefit to those who have scarring or noticeable marks on several areas of the body.

Surgical options for treating stretch marks include:

- Laser surgery: Lasers are best for treating stretch marks that are relatively new or those that are the darkest in color since they detect pigment, making them useless for dealing with older marks that have already faded.

- Microdermabrasion: Although microdermabrasion itself is rarely used for getting rid of stretch marks, it is sometimes combined with other forms of treatment. This procedure removes the uppermost layer of scarred tissue by eroding the skin’s surface.

- Abdominoplasty/Tummy tuck: Perhaps the most drastic of all treatments for stretch marks is the abdominoplasty, or as it is more commonly known, the tummy tuck. This expensive surgical procedure involves completely removing the affects areas, along with excess skin and fat usually in the abdominal area.

Using the right combination of preventative measures and regular treatment for stretch marks, it is possible to minimize their appearance and keep skin looking smooth and healthy.
