Anemia Causes and Cures
Anemia (uh-NEE-me-eh) arises when the body has a lower than normal number of red blood cells. This condition also arises if the body’s red blood cells do not have enough hemoglobin (HEE-muh-glow-bin). Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that gives blood its red color and helps the body’s red blood cells to carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.
If you suffer from anemia, your body is not getting enough oxygen-rich blood. The result is that you may feel tired, sluggish, or have other symptoms. With a severe or long lasting case of anemia, the lack of oxygen in the blood can damage the heart, brain, and other organs of the body. Very severe anemia may even result in death.
Anemia has three main causes which include blood loss, lack of red blood cell production, or high rates of red blood cell destruction. These causes may be due to a number of diseases or disorders, conditions, or other factors.
